What is a Permanent Account Number?

The Permanent Account Number (PAN) is a 10-character alphanumeric code issued by India’s Income Tax Department. It acts as a unique identifier for individuals and entities, enabling the government to track and manage all income tax-related activities.

Although obtaining a PAN is voluntary for most, it becomes compulsory for specific financial transactions exceeding prescribed limits. Businesses, too, must apply for a PAN within 30 days of incorporation or formation.

Requirements of Permanent Account Number

Compulsory for opening Bank Accounts

For opening a savings or current bank account, all individuals and business owners are required to submit KYC documents, with the PAN card being a mandatory and key component of this verification process.

Mandatory for filing ITR

Including a Permanent Account Number (PAN) is compulsory while filing Income Tax Returns (ITR) for individuals and businesses alike. The PAN links all submitted data, facilitating faster assessment and processing by the Income Tax Department.

Nationalized Identity Card

A PAN card serves as a universally recognized identity proof for individuals and businesses alike. It is a key requirement for opening bank accounts and completing various government registrations.

For TDS and TCS transactions

Any person required to deduct or collect tax at source must provide both their own PAN and the PAN of the deductee. Including the PAN ensures that the tax credit is accurately attributed to the correct account.

Mention PAN in specified cases

The government requires quoting of PAN for certain high-value transactions, such as property transfers, substantial bank deposits, large bill payments, and other financial dealings, to promote transparency and accurate tax tracking.
